Density/ Space Pool Analysis

This exercise answered a recurring question I have every time I start a new design project. How to define appropriate density levels for areas where no urban transect can be identified in the surrounding areas. Also, this exercise provided a practical tool to rethink and position the open space typologies.

The site boundaries were used as lenses to look at other cities. The selected cities and locations were ranging between lower densities, middle densities, and higher densities. Yet, all sites need to be recognized as popular and desirable places. My choices, therefore, were Cataloina Barcelona Plaza in Spain, St. Kjelds Quarter in Copenhagen, and the city of the Sun in Netherlands.

As a result, the proposed design of the "Smart WiNDY" considered average numbers of density but provided more active open spaces and community/ public amenities.

This tool holds a lot of potentials to quickly develop an understanding of the far-fetched issues like the sense of scale, projection of economic, social, environmental metrics. However, a lot of research and development need to be conducted to improve metrics and criteria in order to systematically select cities and locations.
