Thesis Project, Seattle, WA

I studied the impact of geothermal energy plants on different urban scales because I wanted to understand how this sustainable technology can influence planning and design today and in the future. The research started with specific questions in mind such as, how do these new technologies work effectively in an urban environment? Are there, if any, any sort of guidelines and principles controlling their application already in place? Finally, how can planners, urban designers and architects improve and upgrade such principels and guidelines?

The three-staged research methodology focused on understanding of the new technologies propspect impact on the phsical and livable features of urban environments; impact on buildings, open spaces, and circulation networks. It also explored how far this technology is capable to shape existing and emerging developments.

Important objectives can be achieved using such technology in different types of urban projects. These objectives can be summarized as follows: creating urban nodes, creating educational oriented developments, creating expanded energy distributions, creating integation with transit systems, create more dense developments, and finally promoting economic development.
