E-Washington St. Gateway

The concept of this neighborhood planning and design is mainly driven by the idea of live, work and play within walking distances from the living units with the emphasis of creating funky and interesting design, aesthetically pleasing. The design was an attempt to incorporate many organic living arrangements in terms of functions, uses and aesthetics.

The integration of organic belts (greenways), dwelling units, retails, commercials, offices, and factories was the hallmark of such planning. Different housing types are created to provide the diversity and affordability. Schools and social centers are located within walking distances of the neighborhood to enhance the concept of the educational oriented development. Abandoned houses and wide setbacks and many other factors led to decrease of any livable atmosphere that was reflected negatively on the economic growth along the corridor. Thus, with a strong and persistent attempt to improve the study area the gateway was the place to start as it was perceived as a catalyst site by the community development council.

Connectivity is a way to tie mixed-use buildings and facilities together to form a sustainable entity so that they will serve each other economically and will help minimizing costs of energy and services. The school has the premium potential to form a base for the development that also includes a number of repeated living units, retail and commercial activities. They are all connected together using green glass suspended gardens in which residents can have a space to grow their needs and sell out any extra. It’s a way to tie and connect the residents socially as well. Connectivity and the design of facilities give a good base to install massive solar systems to make use of the premium sun orientation and movement; those solar systems are installed around water tanks.
